“The only thing that keeps it part of your life is that you keep thinking about it”
In NLP there is a wonderful way to transform your thinking into asking questions and gaining more insight into what is happening in your body and mind.
It is the Think-Feel-Do model. If there is a thought, there is also a feeling. And from there behavior arises. Often we are only aware of a thought, or a feeling or what we do, without knowing the deeper root. We think that we have no influence on our behavior, that it is what happens to us. This means that every experience we have is subjective. This means that every experience and how we perceive the experience is unique, for you and all the people around you. So the way you see the world is unique, and it’s the same for every other person you meet. That also means that there is not one truth. Your truth is based on how you experience the world.
We all have patterns within ourselves. Becoming aware of these patterns is already half of the transformation. Often when I talk about NLP and we come to the P of programming, the question arises whether I am in IT, programming computers. After a good laugh, I continue the conversation with the metaphor of seeing the computer as the brain. We have developed our own strategies in behavior, driven by values and beliefs, the way we grew up, memories, experiences that have created conscious and unconscious behavior.
I had a conversation with a lady about the word programming in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and the allergic reaction she got from it.
I understand that, because if you have given meaning to it based on stories about NLP and perhaps an experience, it becomes what you think. We talked about her thoughts about it, what she felt and the behavior. I also asked what she believed about NLP and where it came from. Wow she said at the end, thank you for this conversation, there is so much clarity.
And that’s what programming is in NLP. Not to program your brain and manipulate your behavior.
It’s about finding which “program” reading structure you have running as a pattern. Once we’ve found that structure, you can change the pattern if you want.
And, if it’s not broken, we’re not going to fix it. You are enough.
Wow she said… I thought you were going to convince me…
